Character Analysis: Angela Martin

Angela Martin

Played by: Angela Kinsey

Job: Accountant

Character Rating: 7.3

Angela Martin is a loved but hated characters in the show. In the first couple of seasons, she seems as one of the background characters that we do not know very much about in comparison to other characters like Michael or Jim. It is hinted at several times that Angela and Dwight have recently started a secret relationship by the start of the show, but it is rarely and subtly mentioned or referenced. She has a rough start, but by the end of the show, you learn to like the character. Again, this blog will discuss Angela through her personal life, professional life, and her reasoning behind the character rating.

In the personal aspect, Angela has an uptight but complicated personality. She usually has to have everything done her way, she is very picky, and she is very snooty and judgmental towards everyone in the office. She is one of those characters that one should not like, yet she grows into a likable character with time. She becomes less condescending with time, but most of it remains throughout the show, but you start to understand her better as the seasons continue. Angela is a cat lady who does not have many friends, which may account for her bad social skills. Her only good thing in the office is her relationship with Dwight. For the first several seasons, they date in secret until Dwight freezes her cat, Sprinkles. Angela then breaks up with him, trading Dwight for Andy shortly after. The two get engaged, but Andy breaks off the engagement after Angela has an affair with Dwight. From there, Angela and Dwight have a roller coaster relationship, including a brief time of Angela being married to a state senator, but they result in having a baby and getting married to each other in the final episode.

In her professional life, Angela is a proficient worker. She works with the other two accountants, Oscar and Kevin, and the three of them sit in their corner of the office and handle the accounting of that branch. One of her only mistakes is not turning in something to cooperate on time, so she has Dwight turn it in for her, which eventually cost him his job. Besides this, there are very few times when she is caught slacking off from work. She and Dwight are the only two workers in the office in one episode when everyone else has left, which shows her dedication. However, there were several instances where she used her breaks to meet up with Dwight. In summary, Angela is a good employee.

The reason that I gave Angela a relatively low score because she was a rude character for a majority of the show. Granted, when it came to Dwight and Angela in their relationship, you always found yourself routing for the two of them. There is a soft side that the viewers get to see several times in the show, like when she gets Dwight a bobble head of him, when she talks with Pam in code about Dwight, when she subtly shows affection towards Dwight, and when she cries to Oscar in the last season about how she misses Dwight. This mixed with her condescending personality earn her the 7.3 character rating that she received.

How did I do? Am I right, or is there something I am missing? Let me know in the comments below. Share a favorite moment if you want. Personally, mine is her throwing her cat through the ceiling. Comment anything about Angela that you want really. Stay tuned for more!
