Character Analysis: Dwight Schrute

Dwight Schrute

Played by: Rainn Wilson

Job: Paper Salesman and "Assistant (to the) Regional Manager"

Character ranking: 9

Dwight Schrute is one of the most iconic characters of the show. In the beginning of the show, we find Dwight as the top salesman of the branch. He adores Michael, his boss, and his goal in life is to one day be the regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin: Scranton Branch. Dwight self-proclaims himself to be the Assistant Regional Manager, but Michael, Jim, and other members of the office often remind him that Michael declared him the Assistant TO THE regional manager, a running joke throughout the show. Per usual, we will be discussing his personal life, professional life, and why he is ranked at the number he is.

For his personal life, Dwight may be a paper salesman by trade, but he is a farmer by passion. Dwight is the owner of Schrute Farms. Dwight lives with his cousin, Mose, and together they run Schrute Farms. This farm is known for its beet farming, and this small detail about Dwight's life has become a marketing trend for people around the nation that wear Schrute Farms beet t-shirts because of the show. We see his farm several times in the show, like when Jim and Pam go to Dwight's bed and breakfast, Dwight hazes Ryan, Dwight hosts the garden party, and other instances. Dwight also has an undying love for Angela Martin, an accountant at Dunder Mifflin. The two of them have a secret relationship through several seasons until season four, in which Dwight freezes Angela's cat. From there, the two split for a while. She then gets engaged to Andy Bernard, a character who will be later discussed, which troubles Dwight. The two then have an affair, and from there, the two have a messy relationship until the end of the show, when Dwight finally proposes to Angela, and the two are married in the last episode.

In his professional life, Dwight is no slouch when it comes to his profession. Dwight is a diligent worker due to his life on the farm, and he will do whatever it takes to be the best at what he does. While Michael is on the show, Dwight serves Michael faithfully, as he treats Michael with authority, but also as his best friend. Even though Michael tries to treat Dwight as his subordinate, the two eventually treat each other mutually as best friends. Dwight also tends to be annoying to his coworkers, so Dwight is often pranked by Jim and occasionally pranked by Pam as well in order to keep Dwight in check. Despite Dwight's odd antics, he is the top salesman of the branch and was the  top salesman of the company as early as the second season two. Throughout the show, Dwight asserts his dominance in sales. In one episode, he races the website to earn more sales and he beats it! Further down the road, Dwight is given the chance to be regional manager, in which he fails by accidentally firing his gun in the office. However, in the final season in the final episodes, Dwight earns redemption and finally becomes the official regional manager of the Scranton of Dunder Mifflin.

Dwight has earned the ranking of a 9 on the character scale because he is arguably the most consistently funny character on the show. In every episode, there is something that Dwight does that will make the audience laugh. There are multiple episodes where people who watch the show will belly laugh at what Dwight says or does. His fault is that he can be too arrogant sometimes and he is occasionally mean to different people in the office. However, there is more to like about Dwight than there is to dislike, and for this reason, he has the ranking of 9.
