Character Analysis: Michael Scott

Michael Scott

Played by: Steve Carrel

Job: Regional Manager

Overall Rating: 8.5

Michael Scott is a benchmark character for the hit show the Office. In the beginning of the show, we meet Michael Scott, a wacky, awkward, egocentric regional manager for the slowly dying paper company, Dunder Mifflin. However, his transformation into a lovable, relatable character is something that is truly special. This blog will focus on his professional life, his personal life, and what makes the character rank the way they do in the analysis.

As the regional manager, Michael Scott is tasked with running the office and making sure that everyone is at their peak performance. As a former salesman, Michael is quite cunning and persuasive on sales calls. He shows his skill in an episode early in the series when he closes a deal after a meal at Chili's with a client and his superior, Jan.  When it comes to managing, however, Michael seems under-qualified for the job he has as the regional manager. In the beginning of the show, the only person that truly likes him in the office is Dwight, the top salesman in the office. Throughout the show, however, he grows into his position and exudes more leadership during his time on the show.

As a person, Michael is the character that tried so hard to be funny with his coworkers that his absence of humor is hilarious to watch unfold. Michael's favorite joke to make is "That's what she said," which essentially revived the dying joke to Millennials and Gen Z members alike. His antics from leading numerous, sometimes pointless, conference meetings to taking work field trips are hilarious to watch. Not only is Michael a crazy boss, but he is also a hopeless romantic. His relationships with Jan, Carol, and even Pam's mom, Helene, just make the audience go, as Pam nicely puts it, "Oh, Michael." He wears his heart on his sleeve, with little payoff for the majority of the show. However, Michael meets Holly Flask, and through many trials, he finally gets the girl and moves away with her near the end of the seventh season.

In summary, Michael Scott is one of the most beloved characters in the Office and possibly television history. There are so select scenes where we see Michael being the hero character of the show. Specific instances include when Michael encourages Jim to keep pursuing Pam, when Michael stands up for his company rather than siding with Jan in the lawsuit,  when Michael comes to Pam's art show, when Michael has a heart to heart moment with Jim when Jim fills in for Michael while hes gone from the office, when Michael negotiates with David Wallace for their jobs back, when Michael fills out a bucket list of things to do before leaving the office, and when Michael becomes the best man at Dwight's wedding. There were also little generalized things that made him great, such as advocating for his employees, spending his own money to make sure they had a good time at office parties, being a best friend to Dwight, being a father figure to Erin, being a mentor to Jim, and a supporter for Pam, and being a lover for Holly. The reason I give Michael is because his character in the first season was a little rough around the edges and he was only featured in the first seven seasons. If he were to have been in the entire series, this character would have been very close to a solid 10.
