Charactar Analysis: Darryl Philbin

Darryl Philbin

Played by: Craig Robinson

Job: Warehouse worker/ Head of shipping

Character Rating: 7.9

Darryl Philbin is a character who was primarily a background character for several seasons, but as time progressed, Darryl slowly became a character that most everyone in the fandom has come to adore. We do not see much of Darryl in the first couple of seasons. He is referenced to a couple of times throughout the show and cameos in a few episodes, but we do not really dive into his character much until around Season 3 when he offers to bring up his synthesizer to the party. We know that he is a bit of a prankster himself, subtly messing with Michael with fake "ghetto" phrases. Once again, this blog will talk about the personal life, professional life, and the character rating of this character.

In his personal life, Darryl is a complex character. From the time he offered to get his synthesizer for the Christmas party, the audience realized that there was more to this background warehouse character that met the eye. He acts all big and tough as the foreman of the warehouse, but when he is with the rest of the office workers upstairs, we see a softer side of the character. Darryl has a daughter, Jada, whose mother is his ex-wife, Justine. In Season 4, Darryl starts to date Kelly, who had recently broken up with Ryan. Kelly essentially uses Darryl to try to make Ryan, which eventually works. However, Darryl is not very saddened because he then celebrates after the breakup. He also dates a girl named Val from the warehouse, who he works very hard for to win over. Eventually, the two break up because of Darryl's move to Philadelphia.

In Darryl's professional life, we first find Darryl as the warehouse foreman of the branch. Darryl is a good friend of Roy's in the beginning of the show, and we often see the two of them together bashing the people who work upstairs. In one episode, Darryl and the other warehouse workers accidentally make Michael contemplate jumping off the top of the building onto a bouncy house, which would not break his fall enough to save him. Darryl talks him down, and it shows Darryl's true colors. Later in the series, he makes a suggestion to the new CEO about a new shipping plan, which gets him promoted to head of shipping and distribution, which earns him an office job upstairs. From there, we see a lot more of Darryl, which was a great move on the writers' part. After a three seasons of working upstairs, Darryl finally leaves Dunder Mifflin to work with Jim in his new company, Athlead.

Darryl is a character that was not given enough screen time in the first several seasons. I do not think anyone in the fandom would say that they saw too much of Darryl. From what we see of him in the last three seasons especially, it makes me wish that there was more of him in the first several seasons. With this said, I am very grateful for the time we get from Darryl. His interactions with Michael, Jim, and Andy were always great to watch. The reason that I rate him lowe than I would want to is because we do not get as much from Darryl that I would have hoped for, and this is why I rate him at 7.9 as a character.
